Taking a day at a time, let’s discover our positive side and take the positive steps we can to ensure our joy and happiness. Look for happy and happy will find you.
Abraham Lincoln said, “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” In short, our happiness is up to us.
Tap on to your positive side and harness what is waiting to come to your rescue. We need to weather the ups and downs of our unfortunate situation that has been thrust upon us. Tracking along the path of positive psychology can get us through times of great uncertainty by way of lighting up and heightening our awareness of our innate happiness.
We know what is making us unhappy but now is the time to focus on what makes us happy. We know that some people bounce back from adversity very quickly, now is the time to realise it is not for just some people, it is for all people. To find ways to sidestep the obstacles to our happiness and realise the many treasures in our life is a choice we can all opt for going forward. If not now when???
Numerous scientific studies have reminded us time and time again of the benefits of positive emotions for our health, wellbeing and quality of life. On the other hand, some of us indulge in constant and chronic worrying about what we can’t change entirely on our own. And yet others, vent out hostilities and anger towards people and circumstances to find it coming back to hurt our inner state of wellbeing and quality of life. It isn’t easy to maintain a positive emotional state all the time, but it is doable most of the time by tweaking some of our ways to harness our inner happiness.
Below are some of what I know and has worked for me:
To reach out and savour the moments: the more I do it the easier and better it gets." I don’t let my everyday pleasures, big and small slip away without having noticed and enjoyed savouring it as it unfolds. This is one of my best self-learnt attributes to my happiness. Don’t miss moments of joy being distracted, be in the moment of every moment and savour the feeling when your heart “jumps for joy”.
Feel and express gratitude: I carry this in my head-space “Gratitude is the Most Powerful Force in the Cosmos”. I acknowledge the connection to things larger than my individual life - to people around me, to nature and the higher power. I am often thinking of big and small things I am grateful for and I am in awe of how much there is. I write them down, very specific about what each means to me. Writing them down is a double joy as I revel yet again putting them on paper.
Connect to inner strengths: I do what comes easily to me now, look within and find my core strength and leverage on it. I got there by learning, unlearning and relearning a lot of my life’s lessons. Still learning but I can look at the right place at the right moment to find what I need for when I need it. Look within and you like me, would recognise some of your innate strengths which would jump to your calling at a heartbeat. If you are not sure of how to find your inner strength, ask someone you trust on what are your complementary qualities and start from there. Acquiring inner strengths are so important that they're worth the weight in gold.
Cultivate and apply your inner happy, stay engaged within yourself and reach out to enrich other people in your life. Keep in mind that health and happiness are joined at the hip by positive psychology.
